Avoid Surgery: Advice from NBA Head Coach Steve Kerr
Recently, an article came out Golden State Warriors Coach Steve battle with debilitating back pain forcing him to step aside as Head Coach during his team’s current playoff run. Steve had his first back surgery in July 2015, after being initially diagnosed with a disc rupture. His second surgery followed in September 2015, because of a complication causing a leaking of cerebrospinal fluid. Cerebrospinal fluid is the fluid that lines and helps protect not only your spinal cord, but also your brain. Now he suffers from complications of those surgeries. At 51, after 2 back surgeries, it is a very real possibility that his career might be over.
This is unfortunately an all too common scenario, and is at times preventable. The American Medical Association recommends chiropractic treatment as the first step to treating low back pain, even before medication, and especially before surgery. Sadly, isn’t always the route recommended to people, and we all too often start treating patients after they have had a spinal fusion or back surgery. After a fusion, you can never regain the proper motion there again. Once you’ve had back surgery, the recovery time is long and difficult, again with no guarantee of success. Although chiropractic care can always help you in the healing process after surgery, chiropractic care BEFORE could save you time, money, and most importantly your quality of life. Listen to the words of Steve Kerr, “”If you have a back problem, stay away from surgery. I can say that from the bottom of my heart.”
